WHAT REALLY HAPPENS TO OUR BODIES WHEN WE EAT CHOCOLATE?
We love chocolate because it is tasty, it is good. The flavor is amazing, and it melts on a tongue. Eating chocolate results in a good mood. Of course, it is a chemical process that happens in the human body. The experience of eating chocolate has an impact on human feelings because of good neurotransmitters being released in brain regions.
Chocolate is usually derived from cocoa, mixed with cocoa butter and finely powdered sugar to produce a solid confectionery. There are several types of chocolate such as dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate, cocoa powder, and etc., classified according to the proportion of cocoa used in a particular formulation.
Just like the caffeine in coffee, the cocoa in chocolate is a chemical powerhouse, rich in active compounds that are quickly absorbed, affecting everything from our energy levels to mood. Cocoa in chocolate contains many biologically active substances that have positive effects on human health, including flavonoids, theobromine, and magnesium. Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and immune system benefits. Diets rich in flavonoid-containing foods are sometimes associated with cancer, cardiovascular disease prevention. Theobromine was discovered in the 1840s, in cocoa beans. Even though there is “bromine” ending, there is no connection to the chemical element “bromine” (Br).In Greek, the meaning of “Theobroma” is “food of the gods.” After drinking the cocoa drink people might really feel the enjoyment. Dark chocolate has a higher amount of theobromine than milk chocolate.
It depends on the kind of chocolate you consume – the healthy compounds are in the cocoa, so the darker the chocolate the better it is for you. Some studies show that a regular dose of dark chocolate can improve memory and brainpower, can lead to a reduction in blood pressure.
There are also other studies that show that even smelling chocolate can result in a decrease in hunger. Those who have acidity health problem should be aware that caffeine also raises acid levels in the stomach and can result in acid reflux and inflammation of stomach ulcers.
In Mesoamerican civilization, the medical use of chocolate was found. Iconographic works, fragments, writings and remnants that date back to 600 B.C. suggest that cacao was used in a beverage. Hernan Cortes, the Spanish conquistador, is credited with bringing of cacao to King Charles of Spain in 1528. In the end of the 16th century, the first shipment of cacao reached Seville, Spain. At that time, Seville was regarded as the biggest and the best-defended port. Merchants from Europe and other trade centers needed to go to Seville to acquire New World trade goods. From Seville cacao spread in the Old World.
Throughout many centuries, there were many religious, medical and cultural disputes about the benefits of chocolate. Despite all controversies about chocolate, for example, Francesco Redi, a doctor and scientist at the Medici court, in Italy, invented the recipe of special jasmine-smelling chocolate under the name "Grand Duke’s recipe.” The Grand Duke didn’t allow to disclose the recipe of the drink in writing, but it was possible to sip this special chocolate drink only in Florence and only at the Court or in the houses of the highest nobility. In Florence, chocolate started to be appreciated and began to influence market development.
We might want to eat chocolate at any time of the day. Definitely, the desire for chocolate eating is not the lack of vitamins. But it is proved that chocolate actually contains some amount of magnesium. Chocolate is not the top magnesium-rich food, but it is the only one that it is proven for the ability to produce dopamine in the brain. Dear readers, please don’t try to increase the quantity of magnesium in your body by eating chocolate. It is necessary to practice mindful chocolate eating. Everything is good in its moderation.
Chocolate fountains are amazing. Liquid chocolate in the chocolate fountain looks like molten lava. It was invented by Ben Brisman and popularized in 1991 by a Canadian company called Design & Realisation, the popularity of which was relatively mild until Design &Realisation began displaying these fountains at the National Restaurant Show in Chicago starting in the early 1990s. Chocolate fountains are wonderful to look at. Whereas it has a great look, it is also a great tool for explaining the complex physic that is behind the fluids move. The chocolate in a fountain goes inward instead of pouring down.
“After about 20 years of marriage, I’m finally starting to scratch the surface of what women want. And I think the answer lies somewhere between conversation and chocolate.” Mel Gibson
